This video is dedicated to the family of Alex Pretti. Our hearts and souls embrace you with love. We the people are with you as you rise above the unthinkable.

The Loss of a Child

The loss of a child is heart-wrenching! It seems like a nightmare you never wake up from. How do I know? My daughter passed away from breast cancer years ago so, I understand the pain, grief and guilt a parent experiences.

  • The pain is like a knife cutting away your heart piece-by-piece.

  • Grief reminds you that you will never see its smile, hear its voice

or laugh at its intriguing and delightful stories.

  • Guilt says, "You should not be here, you should have died first.

It was through God's grace and love I was able to "work through" all of it. Today, this poem grew out of each painful minute.

WE THE PEOPLE POEM

Written by Dr. Mamie Smith – 01/27/2026

What can we say, what can we do

To a heart and mind broken thro’?

To a mother and father who loved a son,

Whose smile is forever gone.

No word or tear can soothe the pain

That blinds and stings like falling rain,

Questions are swift, but answers are slow,

What is there for us to know?

Why did a child have to die

With no time for parents to say goodbye?

A child whose life was doing good

To everyone the best he could.

His country, where freedom to speak is a right

Turned out to be his darkest night,

Reaching out to a woman in need

Was truly his last, earthly deed.

Shots rang out, a child lay dead,

Another bullet reached the head,

What can we say, what can we do

To a country and world broken thro.’

Struggle with love to find a way

To live as brothers another day.

Somewhere, we lost what made us kind,

Left peace and justice far behind.

It’s not too late for amazing grace

To guide us to that rightful place,

Search your soul and find a way,

We all can live . . .another day.

THE UNFOLDING OF A ROSE: THE LOSS OF A CHILD

As mothers and fathers, we the people, know what it means to lose a child. I know the pain a parent suffers at the death of a child. Meta Rose, my daughter, passed away in 2005. Two years of questioning God, asking, "Why my child?" gave birth to my first book entitled "The Unfolding of a Rose." It took every ounce of mental strength to dig deep into my soul and unearth the pain, seek divine wisdom, and learn the true meaning of life. It is offered again to those seeking a greater understanding of life.

This book grew out of struggling to heal guilt and grief from the death of my daughter, Meta Rose.
The Unfolding of a Rose by Dr. Mamie Smith

The Unfolding of a Rose is a stirring account of a mother's love, devotion to her faith, and survival of the unimaginable losing her daughter, Meta, to breast cancer. Mamie Smith's narration beautifully explores the emotional territories of the heart put to the ultimate test and her astounding courage to accept God's plan.

Meta was always a curious and beautiful girl, excelling in school and marrying the man of her dreams. Meta had two children and discovered a passion for entrepreneurial work by developing her own business. Meta's world was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mamie began a search for the "why" of what happened and helped her daughter with her battle with cancer through her study and practice of Christian Science. These women, bound by love and an enduring faith, gained a greater understanding of the true meaning of life-our essence or spiritual being.

As Mamie recounts, "I see her (Meta) as planted by divine mind, nurtured by spirit, and yielding the fruits of love." Smith's amazing and beautiful tribute will resonate with anyone who has survived the loss of a child or may be going through the pain of a terminal illness. Its message is one of love, hope, acceptance and an enduring faith in God.
